Against Constant Availability

Being reachable is a convenience that can quietly become a way of living.

Text

The phone sits face down, but its presence still has a shape.

We know that someone might be asking for us. A small part of the afternoon remains by the door, listening. Even before a message arrives, the possibility of interruption has entered the room.

There are people and moments that deserve an immediate answer. There are also hours that deserve to unfold without being divided into replies. Learning the difference takes more care than choosing a notification setting.

I have begun leaving some messages until after a walk. Most of them survive the wait. Often my answer is better for having spent a little time in the world.

Availability becomes kinder when it has edges we can understand.
