The door closes quietly after someone tightens the hinge.
For weeks, we had learned to lift it slightly as we pulled. The repair takes a few minutes. By the following day, everyone has forgotten the awkward movement, and the person who fixed it receives no further notice.
Maintenance often succeeds by becoming invisible. A clean surface, a backed-up document, a plant watered before its leaves begin to fall. The evidence is that ordinary life can continue.
There is a particular satisfaction in this work. We learn how something is held together, attend to the part that is wearing thin, and give it another season of use.
The hinge will need attention again. For now, the door opens easily.
