At the end of the afternoon, three things remain on the list.
One can wait until tomorrow. One has been waiting all week. The third belongs to a larger project whose ending keeps moving as I approach it. Together they make it tempting to stay at the desk a little longer.
I write a note about where to begin in the morning. This small gesture gives the unfinished work a place to rest outside my head. The list can hold it while I make dinner.
Even a well-spent day leaves something open. There are books half read, repairs to make, conversations we hope to continue. A life needs space for these continuations.
I switch off the lamp. Tomorrow already has a starting point.
