The Weight of Small Decisions

The choices we barely notice can become the structure of an ordinary life.

Text

The first decision happens before the kettle boils.

I can look out of the window or open the news. Both actions take a moment. Each gives the next few minutes a different texture, and those minutes are where the morning begins to take its shape.

We tend to reserve the language of choice for the large occasions. Moving cities. Changing work. Saying yes to another person. Meanwhile, smaller decisions repeat themselves until they feel like the conditions of life.

It helps to notice one of them without trying to repair the whole day. Put the phone on another shelf. Read a page while the water heats.

A small choice becomes easier to recognize once we have made it deliberately.
